70's Godzilla

"Lets Face it, Seventies Godzilla kicked way more monster ass than any other and did it with style. "

I drew this as a companion piece to this little speech I'm about to give. Power through it, I promise it won't be long.

This is me attempting to draw my favorite incarnation of Godzilla; the one born of the late sixties and seventies. This to me is the epitome of what Godzilla is. My childhood hero. Camp and goofiness aside, lets face it, it isn't the first film that makes Godzilla a house hold name, its the resulting franchise born from him.

So for all those of you who want Godzilla to be some evil demon representing nuclear holocaust, that is fine, but I'd be willing to bet more than 90% of you guys grew up watching the later Showa Godzilla films where he was a good guy protecting the planet.

I for one feel like almost all of Godzilla's motif and what made him interesting and original amongst other rubber suited monsters from around the world was his character and personality. He was just badass as hell. Something that died out right around the time the heisei series was created and hasn't quite come back since.

I unlike most the fans don't see a point in ANOTHER giant mutant monster created by nuclear stupidity to represent the power of the nuclear bomb. It is scary enough on its own, it doesn't need a face or a rationale. If you truly wanted, I mean if you people truly wanted something to encompass that feeling just watch a film based on the actual results of a nuclear explosion. Oh, whats that, not comfortable with it? Well then if you're not comfortable with watching nuclear holocaust accurately portrayed, you need a giant monster to do it... then why not just watch a film for the giant monster anyway and skip the euphemism?

And if that isn't enough for you; remember this, Napalm killed more Japanese in the war than the bombs did. A little something to think about. So wouldn't a big scary fire monster be worse?

Ontop of that; if Toho truly wanted Godzilla to make money they'd go the Kamen Rider/Ultraman route. Its no wonder children didn't want to go see Godzilla but did wanna go see those magical Mothra movies. They don't wanna watch an hour and a half of the world trying to kill their hero. They wanna watch an hour and a half of their hero kicking ass.
